Where did you source the boar knot for that restore? and what size?

I have a rubberset that I think will look best with a boar. Thought about a 26mm omega donor...but am curious to learn about other options.

Ugly Brush Restore

 

Oh yeah...I certainly remember the transformation. Huge undertaking and fantastic result. That looked like a tough brush to bring back...it had one foot in the grave...lol. Bravo.

Thanks for the knot info. Would you say they break in fairly quick? Do they feel more like an omega or semogue?

 

Stiffer than the Semo knots, so they do take a bit longer to break in. More like the Omega 48/49 knots when NEW— not floppy, just stiffer.

This GB dropped on the doormat two days ago, 107 grams and 30,5 mm wide which is halfway 9/8 and 10/8 of an inch. After cleaning it up and some polishing I put an edge on it. It had a bevel angle of about 15 degrees so I allowed myself 3 layers of tape. The geometry is a little off but it turned out oke. Surprisingly I had a very smooth shave and hardly any alumsting.

Vintage Swiss-made Jaques LeCoultre frame back….

 

What end of the range do you feel framebacks and faux framebacks fall on? Do they shave more full hollow or do they preform more like a thicker blade?

 

TRUE frame backs (such as the LeCoultre above) have blades that are uniformly thin or rather flat, not concave/ hollowed as the faux FBs tend to be.
Thicker blades than the modern replaceable shavette blades, but a slightly different feel from a standard 'full-hollow' grind.

 

So a different animal all together. I've tried a faux frameback but it wasn't really shave ready so it didn't really give me a good idea of how it felt. I've only ever used 1/2 to full hollows and shavettes that take half DE blades.
