Robert, it was a bear to hone. I've never a honed a razor with such a thick spine and shoulder—plus the smile. I did remove a good bit of the heel prior to honing. The razor would not sit flush/flat against the stone due to the thickness of the raised shoulder where it broadens and creates a ridge at the spine.(see photo below) I managed to ham-fist my way through it and get a decent edge, and it shaves halfway decent—but the edge probably needs some help.
6/8 Wacker Inox Prep SS homemade boar Fine Clean Vetiver Very nice shave this morning. Have a good one.
My only shave today with this Mulcuto Diamon 6/8. I've sold it but I wanted to give it a test drive before it leaves. Honing it, the razor took a nice edge and shaves quite nicely (smooth!). This was one of a number of straight razors I acquired last March at antique shops in Nevada City. The blade needed some help and wasn't centering properly due to loose pins, eventually losing a bit of the square point tip (see photo at bottom) from hitting the scale/wedge repeatedly. Re-pinned the hinge; rounded off the broken tip and the blade buffed up beautifully. The old chipped nose…
6/8 Wacker Inox de Vergulde Hand homemade horse My last horse experiment. The brush worked fine, a little prickly for my taste but I don't know if it will break in or it is was it is. Nice shave.
My new 'favorite'—a recent discovery for me, but I've been so impressed by this DD Goldedge. By far, the smoothest shaver in my collection.
Dubl Duck are great shavers and easy to hone, too. Some of my first razors were Dubl Ducks. Dubl Ducks were used by barbers in the USA for a good while in the 20th century. My local female barber gave me one from her barber school days.
F.A. Clauberg Tonsorial Gem The edge on this is superb. Early in my use of straight razors, Richard, a member of my local straight razor group honed two 7 day sets for me. At the time I didn't realize how good a job Richard does. I'm still striving to hone that well.
Robert, I'm not sure why this razor seems to surpass the others in terms of comfort and performance, but I suppose I can attribute it to the skill of the craftsman who created it. Obviously they knew what they were doing. Another razor that feels quite similar yet not as smooth to this DD is my Beau Brummel—same manufacturer, so no surprise there. This DD gold edge was refinished and honed by Glen, whereas my BB was honed by…..me. And therein lies the biggest difference in the resulting shaves. How often have you used a 7-day set (i.e. use the razors consecutively all week)?
I've read weird things, like the Dubl Ducks being so popular the company had trainees grinding and that they ground them very thin. I had a Beau Brummel and I liked the DD's better as well. I have yet to go through every razor in a 7 day set for a week, but I will do that. Most 7 day sets were/are 5/8 like the Clauberg and Wm Elliot set and I prefer larger blades. My Schulze set is 6/8 and my Souvenir set is 7/8. I'd like an 8/8 set. I could put together a mixed 7 day set with 8/8's.
Wm Elliot 21 I will be using these through Saturday. I feel motivated by Kevin to use all of my 7 day set straights consecutively. Yesterday's F. A. Clauberg Tonsorial Gem is part of the Wm Elliot set. I guess one got damaged and replaced by another brand. They all have the same scales and blade size and design. I'm continuing to use Steve's boar and synthetic brushes, the boar on soaps I previously couldn't lather properly. I used the boar on a French soap, Savon Du Midi Mistral and got an amazing lather.
It was the 6 weeks anniversary of my bike accident yesterday. Tomorrow I will be shaving with both hands. What a relief. The doctor said the clavicle AC break was completely healed and perfectly aligned and didn't even think I needed physical therapy. I heal very well for a 63 year guy. Here I am posing using my left hand to shave with Tuesday's Wm. Elliot razor.
That's great news, Robert! Sure, I'm jealous…………. but I am getting pretty good at shaving with my right hand….
