Tonight's shave was with a Razor that is super sharp, but just doesn't take it to the next level. I thought I was on a roll. It was a two pass shave, that just wasn't smooth, but it did take the stubble off. I don't get it, it passed the hanging hair test, easily, and seemed as sharp, if not sharper than most anything I have. Then, it fades as the shave progresses towards the end. My only thought is that it's possibly too sharp?? Or, perhaps the temper just isn't up to snuff. Anyway, No nicks, cuts or weepers.
I'll look at it more, next time I break out the stones.

I used my Wade and Butcher BN today. I got a very good shave overall, but it felt a bit tuggy. At the suggestion of a member here, i rehoned it last weekend with two pieces of tape. It treetopped arm hair and I thought all was good, but I'll need to go back to the hones with this one. Anyway, three passes and it's a DFS to BBS shave.

I had some issues with my Challenge Cutlery. I guess it was named appropriately:). It took me three times before I was happy.

Tonight's shave was with a trusted German razor. I had a two pass shave, that went very well, sharp and smooth. Excellent results. No touch-ups needed.
I've looked around for another of these razors, but they don't seem to pop up often.

Razor- "The Gong Razor" . Extra German Hollow Ground.

Considering all the variables that go into honing (the stones, the technique used) as well as the variations from 'patient to patient' (odds are, a well-used straight razor has had many honers, potential wear on the blade, age, abuse, etc), I expect the majority of razors we encounter will require some problem solving in order to create a good, consistent result. I've discovered a single honing strategy or regimen may work wonderfully on a particular razor, but on another...not so much.

Ahhh, I remember seeing Carl Friedrich Ern listed as the maker of Gong Razors, on eBay several times. I just thought they were name dropping to sell the razor. That makes sense, as to why it is such a good razor. Thanks for the info Billy.

My first using this vintage Sheffield #3415 6/8" razor from Joseph Smith & Sons (1833-1886)—unique due to the 'fuller' or 'blood groove' evident on one side. Some debate regarding the purpose of these grooves when found on razor (typically one sees them on swords, knives & bayonets) although the main purpose was/is to reduce the overall blade weight. Scary-sharp edge!
