What Straight Razor Did You Use Today?

Today's shave was with a German Made and Ground blade. I had a fantastic 2 pass shave, that left me BDBS. Zero issues. It might not look like much, but this is a fine shaving razor.

Razor- J.H.Obold & Co. Germany
Brush- JR#262. Ebony/Birdseye Maple. Silvertip Badger Knot
Soap- Arko/Avon Spicy Scented
Aftershave- Avon Spicy. Vikings Horn Decanter.

 

3 full passes tonight and so so close to being an epic shave, spoiled by one momentary lapse of attention and sliced my neck just below the jawline. Minor, but visible. It will leave a lovely line tomorrow. Serves me right for trying too hard for BBS ... pretty much there though Definitely the best overall finish I've had from a straight shave, with maybe a touch more irritation than usual.

You can predict what I am going to say about my 1941 ZTV Russian razor. Da Comrades, it was glorious. In addition to the sharp and smooth qualities, this blade is one of the most maneuverable I own. It is a pleasure to use.

PS - If anyone can translate what’s on the tang, please let me know.

This razor has been an ongoing problem. It arrived with a frowning bevel (from the factory) and has never sharpened up. I was travelling at the time so couldn't return it. Decided to tackle it myself, and worked on it yesterday. Well the frown is gone and it shaves but I wouldn't want you honemeisters to see how much steel I took off.

Sorry to hear that, my Master's has been joy. But then again the vendor I bought it from honed it for me. I hope it is behaving now.

 

Metal removal has to happen to remove a frown. From the factory, it's likely overground in the middle rather than a true frown. You can hone into the frown using the corner of a hone, but it's a PITA to keep doing it.

I don't recall seeing that one before. It's a real beauty.

 

Maybe there is hope for the razor yet then. Its shaves pretty well. I think that once I have developed better honing knowledge and skills I might go back and work on it some more.

I hadn't thought of honing into the frown from the corner. Will remember that one.

 

Today was my second straight razor shave. I used a basic Dovo 5/8, Arko (for Arko April), lathered up repeatedly with a Simpson best Classic 1 because I was slow and kept drying out, and FINALLY reached post-shave with a big splash of Battle Cat.

Still not fun and relaxing, but I know that’ll come with time.

 

The Filly was on my mind so it was an easy choice. And what a fabulous shave she gave. A light touch brings out the best in this one. Super close shave with that nice Velcro sound throughout. Hard to beat this shave.
