Very nice shave tonight, from a German made razor, with bone scales. I had a smooth 2 pass shave, that left me BBS. Zero issues. It is just a well made razor.

Razor- Crown & Double Sword. Germany.
    Brush- RazoRock 400 WD Badger
    Soap- Arko/Sandalwood scented
    Aftershave- Florida Water

I still want one of those.

He has got 2 razors I sooo want to add. One is the other Rasoir Sabre you have. And he just got a batch of Wacker Chevaliers.

My problem is that since I started shavette training using the Focus R21 shavette I'm just not finding my straights getting quite as close. Don't get me wrong, I love them. It just seems like this $20 piece works so well.

To remedy the imbalance, I decided to step up on my edge game. So instead of plunking 2-1/2 Ben notes on pretty razors I ordered one of the limited large combination convexed Arkansas stones to see what I can get.

From what I have been reading, it may be the ticket I'm looking for. We'll see.

Well, my efforts last night paid off and the Geneva performed well. Thanks all for your "likes" on the what have I honed thread".

I have always said whatever works the best for anyone, stick with it. I do think in your particular situation these French razors will give you the shave you desire.

Well, today we're experimenting with blades. After musing about what kind of stones produced what kind of edges, @Steve56 generously offered to put JNAT edges on a couple of my razors for me to compare and see the difference for myself. Today I shaved the left side of my face with the 5/8 Dovo he sharpened, and shaved the right side of my face with the 6/8 Dovo with a factory edge that I've touched up on a 12K Naniwa. Overall, both blades are sharp and smooth. Too early to tell the difference for me, so I'll be at this a few more shaves. I can tell you that I really don't notice major differences in most DE blades, and really don't pay a lot of attention to which one I load, as most of them are more than adequate to produce the results I expect. I felt a bit this same way about today's shave. Maybe its because I'm not a dark side ninja yet and therefore the subtleties are lost on me. Maybe I'm just not that "blade sensitive". Maybe it's just too early to tell after 1 comparison shave. Time will tell. Again, thanks a TON to @Steve56, as I look forward to more JNAT v. synth comparison shaves!

Well I honed it! I totally dulled the edge and then honed it. But Im not skilled!! I’v recently started honing with a coticule. I got a good enough edge to be able to maybe obtain a BBS in 3 or 4 passes (I was interrupted during my second pass and not able to preform more passes) and was good enough to preform a fouls pass which is for me a sign of edge quality. But the razor was very far from the sharpness and smoothness of my best razor a Japanese Diamond(which was honed by a professional with a 10k Naniwa. So I suspect the quality of steel and temper in the ZY is far less them in the Diamond. Of course, I didn’t
Had the zY professionally honed. But when I hone my Dovo or my Filarmónica I do get better shaves then with the ZY.
I do thank any honing advices I can get
    Thank you

I have the ss Feather foldable shavette or Straight. Last time I used it did a wonderful wtg and xtg, but before I got to the atg just made a cut on the low lip just because I lost some concentration and was shaving like with a real straight. So that’s the problem with shavettes they are unforgiving But very efficient.

You don’t feel any difference between a feather DE blade and a Derby extra for example?

Well, those are pretty extreme examples. Feather is sharper than 99% of the blades out there. Derby is more dull than 99% of the blades out there. Both will provide a BBS with proper technique, but that’s not what you asked.

I’m speaking in general here. I’d say with proper technique, the differences in “feel” of 80-90% of blades are pretty minimal.

It's all about practice. I have some top of the line, Vintage razors, which are a bear to get a proper edge on, but once they get the edge, they are fabulous. I also have some Gold Dollars, that were difficult, because of the stabilizer mods that had to be done, but once the mods were done, an edge came about easy. The edge on these are very nice. What it all boils down to is blade geometry, and quality of steel. Oh, and the ability to adapt to different blade types. I find the Modern Chinese razors are made with very nice steel. Now, does the ZY have the proper geometry?? The Chinese razors are notorious for their little quirks, with the spines, or stabilizers. Adapt and overcome. Once the puzzle is figured out, fantastic edges will come, even from unknown vintage razors. Unknown vintage razors are another subject. But most are made with quality steel, but, like many modern razors, the dimensions might be off.
