I Got My Factory Fresh NOS Herder Solingen Stainless 5/8th Today in the Post..I Honed her Up in Jig Time..I have Read Elsewhere in Some Forums that Stainless SRs Take Longer to Hone..That's Not My Experience..I Have Also Heard Some Say Stainless Blades Don't Take as Sharp an Edge as Carbon Steel Blades..That's Not My Experience Either..In the Contrary..:D

I Have Never Honed a Current Stainless SR but the Few Vintage Ones Around that Used this Steel are Just Awesome Shavers..Herders are No Run of the Mill Solingen SRs..This is My 2nd One..They are the Cream of the Crop..It Took a Wicked Sharp & the Finest of Edges..I Could have Shaved with this SR from the 1 K Stone..:)

Found this video and I'm impressed by the way he explained it . All about checking and settling bevels. A different perspective for sure.

  6. Using Lynn's circle method with Norton 4000/8000 stone I honed 2 Wapienica SFKs aka WAPI, a vintage Wade & Butcher, and Dovo INOX Olivewood. Good use of time waiting for the Clemson/OSU game.

Not quite a straight, but close enough. Thanks for the advice of more force and one piece of tape, @Billyfergie. Took about 40 minutes to work all the chips out and go through a 1, 3, 5 k then hard and translucent Arkansas stones. Stropped on the counter, and did chromium oxide, linen and leather. Off to test it now.

Epic freaking shave. Got the edge right. Wish I could dial my straights in this well.

    Two Razors honed today.

    1. George Wostenholm "Pipe Razor"
It was a little bit of a pain. It was a rust bucket, with rust inside the gold inlay. I couldn't save the gold enough to have it satisfy me, so off came the gold. The blade had a couple of deep rust spots on the edge, that didn't look like much, but took time to hone out, to some clean steel. After that it went fast, and took a very nice fast wicked edge. It also shaved very very well.

    Hone #2:

    TILLOTSONS CELEBRATED RAZOR Sheffield
Very easy hone. It took a nice bevel. It looks and feels like Swedish steel. End result, very sharp. It just took a while to get through, due to the hardness of the steel.

My first one, and probably not be my last. I need to repin this one first.

I haven't honed anything other than my hunting knife, but have the Norton 4/8k. I'm thinking about a finisher. Any one here have the ILR 12k? Any thoughts?

Not a fan. Don't believe the online hype (particular from the seller). For the money, the Naniwa 12k is a far & away better finisher...

Waiting for the hones and some work….
Another Dubl duck — this one has been in my shop drawer for several years so I figured it was time to revisit it.
This is a DD 'Dwarf'— a slightly smaller razor than a traditional duck (hence the moniker); 5/8" square-point blade, blued tang, full-hollow grind; celluloid 3-pin scales.

The blade has a slight frown (one of the reasons I put it aside). The blade has some scratches along both sides of the spine and the blueing has worn in some areas.
Here is the Dwarf next to a full-size Satinedge DD blade:

Another shot, free from the scales, showing both the size and the evident frown in the blade edge:

I'll second the Naniwa 12k. I've used it on all my razors and have found it to be excellent!
