does it turns purple when wet? have a claimed yellow lake aka Llyn melynllyn from aj_1000. it`s a very nice finisher.there is an even finer welsh slate that is called the welsh turi.
never tried that, but i know @DaltonGang has one.

I haven't Got it Yet..These Vintage Labelled Yellow Lakes Come in Various Packaging & Grits..Some are as Low as 6 K Apparently..Going with What I Could Find as its Sketchy if You Get a Good One You are Laughing..I Will be Using this with Oil the Same as My Arkie..The Red Labelled One like this One is Supposed to be the Finest & Some Say a Fine Finisher if You Get a Good One..;)

Bearing in Mind..Yellow Lake is the English Brand Name in this Case & Not Necessary a Stone from the Yellow Lake Area in Wales..:happy088:

Some time ago I put together this blade and inexpensive scales to try my hand at "building" a SR from scratch. It was an inexpensive experiment: the blank blade was around $10 and the plastic scales were around $10 as well. I wanted an inexpensive straight to take with me when I travel. Something that if it was lost or stolen I wouldn't care. The blank was from Fendrihan...and there are no markings on the blade or tang. Not sure if it is a GD or not...I am not entirely sure. They do look similar.

I just got around to honing it today. Will take it for a spin tomorrow morning. Not easy to hone...but it has passed all the tests...except the shave test. Tomorrow!

I Took a Risk on it Cause it was a Give Away Price & it Looks Kinda Mint n Flat..Also..The Oil Stone thing is What Pulled Me Towards it..Now Whether this is Gen Up or Not I Dunno..But..I Read a Guys Experience of One of these Stones..He Used His Stone with Water at 1st with an SR & he Reckoned it Was Offering around an 8 K Finish..He Went on to Suggest that His One Anyway was Light Years Ahead of a 12 K Stone when Lapped to 1000/1500o Grit & Used with a Light Oil..;)

    :char039:..Time will Tell..

In looking at a magnified image of this Welsh stone, it looks like the one I bought from AJ. It looks like the 8k stone I have. I use mine with water, and haven't tried oil, and probably won't. These stones(8k 12k 15k) aren't nearly as hard as the SB Arkie. Not even close. I've lapped the Welsh stones. Compared to the Arkie, lapping the Welsh stones feels like you're working with Talc.

Here is a Thread on this Stone I Just Got..There is a General Consensus that these Stones Vary Somewhat..By a Wide Margin in Some Cases..My Stone is Recommended for Using with Oil Only Just Like My Escher Thuri Recommends Using Water Only..;)

And this Guys here that Reckons his has a 12 K + Finishing Capacity with Oil..I Am Nor Expecting Much from this Stone..I Bought it with an Open Mind..I am a New Comer to Natural Finishers..But..The One thing I have learned with My Recent Experience with Arkie Stones is that Some Folks Just Cant Use them & Also Some are Sacred about Particular Stones or Condemn Others to the Fires of Hell..:D

Me..I Hold Nothing Sacred..I Once Witnessed a Fellow Royal Marine Dropping Man Sized Targets with a Browning Auto 9mm at 400 + Metres Consistently on the Firing Range with A Folding Sight & Shoulder Stock..The Person that he was Demonstrating this to was Struggling to Hit the Target with an Assault Rife..My Royal Marine Friend Taught Me that Nothng is Sacred & the Mind is a Powerful Tool..;)

We Sometimes get what we Expect..Expectation's are Powerful..The Guy that was Struggling with the AK 47 Assault Rife was Regular Army By the Way..He was Used to Using the Woman's .223 Nato Round & Couldn't handle a Mans 7.62 Round..:happy097:

@Billyfergie , I'm sure if I lapped the Welsh stones with a higher grit paper, and used oil instead of water, it would hone at a higher grit level.. But, I'm not messing with my stones, they are dialed in.
I'm sure you will find out the properties of your new stone, as soon as you lap it. It's a nice looking stone.
I do like your poke at the teensy little round that the US military uses. I use the same, but if I had my choice, it would be an AK, for an urban rifle. My preferred weapon is the 12 gauge 00 buck, Benelli M2, for urban use, with a Colt 1911 .45, on the side.

those were the days when men was shooting with a man`s ammo.we used the heckler & kock AG3 assault rifle with the 7,62x51 round.slightley more power then the x39 AK47 round.today the Norwegian forces also use the girly 223

My NOS Yellow Lake Branded Finishing Oil Stone Arrived in the Post Today..The Stone was Factory Lapped Flat & Chamfered..I Lapped it Smoother with 350, 600 to 1000 Grit with Wet & Dry..Took Me all of 5 Min..As You Can See this Stone is Ultra Smooth & has a Glass Like Finish & Feel to it..;)

Some Guys have Been Shot in Flames for Comparing this Stone to an Escher Thuri in Some Forums..Some Guys have Suggested its Not Fit for Finishing Razors at All..Well..I Happen to Agree with this Sellers Take on this Yellow Lake in the Link Below..:p

I Reckon this Yellow Lake when Properly Prepared has Around the Upper End of a 12 K/15K Finishing Capacity Akin to My Escher Thuri..I Plonked Down a 12 K Naniwa Super Stone Pre Finished Edge on the Yellow Lake with Oil..The Yellow Lake Picked Up the 12 K Edge & Ran with it Refined it Away Beyond the Naniwa 12 K..No Problem..I Done around 100/150 Sets on this Stone..Job Done..

This Myers & Sons Sheffield Razor was Popping Hanging Hairs Straight from the Stone..This Razor Provided Me with a Lovely Shave Straight from the Stone without Pastes when I Test Shaved it..I Happen to like to Finish on Pastes..My Preference..So I Hit it with 7 Sets on 0.5 Chro/Ox..:)

The Edge from the Yellow Lake is as Smooth & Keen as the Edges from My Escher Thuri & My Arkansas Surgical Black..This Particular Stone I have is a Superb Finishing Hone..My Sheffield has Taken a Superb Shaving Edge from this Yellow Lake Stone..Its a Keeper for Sure..:D

Is this the Welsh Slate you were talking about?? Did you oil hone with it?

Yes..It Looks Slate to Me..Its a Very Fine Stone..Kind of Like Honing on an Arkie although its a Faster Cutter..I Personally Wouldn't Dream of Using Water on this Stone..The Makers Recommend Oil Only..Funny thing is..Its Quite a Soft Stone..A Lot Softer than My Escher Thuri to Lapp..But..Feels Like Hard Glass to Hone On..Weird I Know..:happy088:

I had some time this afternoon and decided to clean up and hone a couple of new acquisitions. I have a Thomas Meg Co. razor that was given to me by @Screwtape and a shoulder less Torrey that needed some attention.
    [IMG][IMG]
After some cleaning, hand polishing, and honing, they looked like this.
I shaved with the Thomas this afternoon and was very pleased with the shave. I'm still a rookie at honing, but got this one right. The Torrey is on deck for tomorrow morning.
    Good night.

I've finally done it! My first shave with a razor that I honed myself that was as nice a shave as my professionally honed razors. I can't tell you how pleased I am.
