I have a Shapton glass 16k and it is my go to finisher. I am getting very sharp yet very smooth edges from it. Tried the natural route but this is less fuss for a fantastic edge.

    Keith,
I have read that the Shapton 16K needs frequent lapping, even during use. Can you comment?

It’s pretty hard, no more lapping than any other stone. It is a pleasure to use.

And the enabling continues... I was happy with what I had only 2 minutes ago, guys!

Yeah, Keith, I just got mine Wednesday. I've used it on four blades and shaved with two of them. It really does make a difference!

Three dubl ducks, right is a bresduck satinedge, left two are pearlduck bottom another satin edge.
Just finished 5k after the 1k will finish later with the 8k naniwa.
They all left about same amount of metal behind but the pearl to left looks like new very clean.

In the interest of science, may I ask what you use for lapping your Sharpton Glass 16k?

I don’t remember the brand but I use a diamond lapping plate 400 and 1,000 grit.

I use my Norton flattening stone. Works for me!

I am currently using a 3" x 8" lapping plate. I am considering an abrasive sheet on a marble tile. My thoughts are a larger lapping surface is preferable.

    I'm open to any suggestions.

FWIW, so far, I'm successful in my resistance to the 16k enablers.

I use a sheet of w/d sandpaper on tempered plate glass, but lapped tile, granite, or marble would do as well.

    Cheers, Steve

Can you give grit suggestions! Thx.

Sure, for normal maintenance lapping, I start with 320 or 600, usually 320, then halve the grits up to 2000 for a fine jnat or synth. So 3 sheets, 320/600/1200-1500.

    Cheers, Steve
