Concerning Bumps, Rash, Ingrown Hairs, Etc... When I get ingrown hairs they appear in the form of acne (zits), kind of embarassing for a 37 year old man having zits. If they appear in the form of zits, I just pop them and wipe off with a wash cloth. I think the rash and irritation will go or reduce in time as your face becomes more acclimated to shaving with a DE or whatever you are shaving with. That's why I (personally) think that sticking to one kind of shaving whether it be DE, SE, Straight, or Cartridge is important. Again this is just what works for me, as many here I have found use different types of razors in a rotation. If this does not work, go to a drugstore, or even a Dollar General/Family Dollar, or even a Dollar Tree (this is where I go to get mine) and buy a tube of Hydrocortisone cream, and apply to the affected area(s). You will notice a difference in a day or two. Be sure to read the info on the back as it will say not to overuse it, Hydrocortisone, I believe, is a type of topical steroid. I personally use it once or twice a week and it seems to help from growing and getting ingrown hairs and helps with irritation and rash, and is very cost effective.
+1 to that You can get Hydrocortisone cream in a supermarket in the US? Over here we need a doctor's prescription and even then the side effects can be pretty severe. It's kinda like killing flies with the atomic bomb.
It used to be the same way here in the US, and then in a Dollar Tree Store, I was looking around the personal hygiene section and saw a bin for hydrocortisone, surprised me as well because my mom for a long time used a prescription from a dermatologist called "Delacort" to treat her excema on the back of her neck. I bought some not for my face, but because I had lesions breaking out on my chest (fungal in origin) due to having to take anti-rejection drugs (have a kidney transplant) that suppress my immune system. Thought it might work on my face with shaving bumps and irritation and all; and I got lucky. Even then I use it very conservately. The directions say not to use it more then 3-4 times a day, I use it 2-3 times a week when I break out. My face still isn't perfect, but that's due to using a facial mask for a c-pap and have to have it tight for a perfect air seal around my face. That leaves marks that are also helped a little with the hydrocortisone. My suggestion is to use it very sparingly like I do and if you find that it's hurting you more than helping then of course discontinue.
I've found that acne lotion with 2% salicylic acid works wonders. It's readily available and affordable. Once the bumps have cleared up a nightly cleansing with acne pads (walmart equate brand) will help prevent future flair ups. YMMV
i used to have the same problem, my doctor recommended face scrubs daily, he says the hairs are too thin that when u shave ur skin ends up growing over the follicle, if the hair is too thin or "blunt" to penetrate the skin, u end up having the hair curl up and irritate the skin. to be honest i have tried for year, there is not much u can do, eventually it will go away, i am 19 now, and i suggest u don't pick at them too much, u can pop them, but don't squeeze too hard or u will get permanent scars. just scrub as much as u can off, allow the hair to grow thick before shaving so u have a good stub that can penetrate through hairs. i still have no grown a full beard, and i know when it starts growing in those untouched spots, i will get ingrown hairs. its something u have to live with
Best way to remove ingrowns is to have your girlfriend yank them out with tweezers. I had a neck full of em till my gf picked em out--haven't been back in years---it was amazing how long some of them were.
