I tried a new limited-release dark-roasted coffee from Peet's— 'Congo Kivu' "...with a signature flavor of cherry that is at once tart and sweet, it segues smoothly to deep, dessert-like tones of rich, unrefined sugar." Extremely fresh (roasted 4 days ago), the cup was smooth, rich with a slightly sweet aftertaste. A keeper. Drip-method using my old Technivorm MoccaMaster.
Yeah, I think the marketers took some liberties in the coffee flavor write-up. I personally didn't detect a 'signature cherry' flavor, but did find the flavor on the tart side. I detest flavored coffees so I was wary after reading the profile described in the sales copy. An enjoyable cup.
Made with Forger’s Crystals because, as you are well aware, “the best part of waking up is Forgers in your cup!”
I've been buying green coffee beans and home roasting them for almost 20 years now. Nothing beats freshly ground AND freshly roasted coffee, it's a quantum leap above above anything you can find in a grocery store. I particularly like bright East African coffees and I'm currently enjoying a Rwanda Kivu Kageyo Station coffee that I buy from sweet maria's website. Buying green beans is relatively inexpensive - $5-$6 per lb - although obviously you need to have the equipment to do the roasting. I prefer my beans roasted just short of Full City as roasting them further tends to destroy their flavour of origin. I prepare my coffee in a Bodum French Press and always drink it black. I enjoy good coffees and through the internet I can order from dozens of varieties from all over the world. Having said that I certainly don't mind a nice cup of strong Lavazza from a Bialetti stovetop moka pot.
Agreed! I home-roasted for a few years— preferring a darker roast—and was very pleased (spoiled?) by the results. I may get back into it...if I can find the time!
I home roast as well. I've been ordering from Sweet Maria's - I really like the Ethiopian origin coffees, my wife prefers Brazilian - and roasting in a Whirley Pop on the stove. I like a light to medium roast on them. We've got the temps and timing down on our gear and much prefer it to store bought coffee anymore. We rarely buy coffee from restaurants anymore either. 12 oz microwaved water, 1 tsp each of Kava low acid instant and Cafe Bustelo instant and a shot of heavy cream in one of '65 G-Slim's heavy cobalt mugs. Not bad. Not bad a-tall.
