The Stahley on a Weber handle is still a daily user, but the "NEW" OC has been replaced with a Maggard Slant bar.
Wow, it's been a while and the top 3 has changed a few times for me! Here's the latest and greatest: 1940's Superspeed Q3 1976 adjustable Black Beauty DE 89 head on whatever handle fits
#20 flaretip rocket 3rd gen #15 brit aristocrat, flat bottom tech .... different from my last post here last year... will change again i am sure...
A Blackbird and Charcoal Goods are on the wish list. As it stands: 1. Rockwell 6C 2. Muhle R41 3. Merkur 38 HD
Your absolutely right my favorites seem to change over time. Techs (pre war), British, Canadian, and American Flares ... English, American, and Brazilian Schick Krona Gillette Minora Oops I got four.
i downsized a bunch recently so the my new magic # is 25 .my friend is building a vintage shaving display in his man cave. so i have 25 favorites..
My preferences change frequently, but my '58 Fatboy and '49 NDC Super Speed seem to get the most use.
1- Merkur Progress (versatile and gives the best shaves to me) 2- Edwin Jagger DE89 Barley ( Great beginner DE. Good at daily shaves) 3- Merkur 38C ( Long handle. Shaves great)
I've always loved the Edwin Jagger Chatsworth Barley. Now I've seen this, and I love the color. Looks like very close, but a little lighter ... wich I prefer. And in Rose Gold is great.
My top 3 are as follows: 1) Gillette New Deluxe 2) RazoRock Game Changer Open Comb 0.84 3) Gillette Old Type Honorable Mention: Schone Open Comb
1) Pearl SHD 33 -- Never though I'd like this razor so much. Far and away my favorite. Great handle, great balance, great head, medium to aggressive, just the way I like it. 2) Gillette Tech Fat Handle -- My favorite one was made in Canada, It has the triangular slots, and is a pre-1941 vintage, I think. Again, great balance, and a bit more aggressive than other Techs I have. 3) Gillette New, Short Comb -- Again a razor with great feel and balance, and good aggressiveness for me. Background -- I am an advanced-degreed Mechanical Engineer, specializing is materials, experimental and mathematical stress, deflection and vibration analyses (solid mechanics) and simulation of service environments, retired from a career in automotive and aerospace vehicle testing. I cannot believe how precise old Gillette razors are, for how inexpensively and numerously stamped out they were. Blade location is always so good -- so much better than so many new expensive razors. Frankly, Gillette's plating puts most of the new stuff in the shade. I am not in this to be a Gillette fan. I never expected to like my Gillettes as much as I do. I bought them to see what things were like in the "old days". There are Gillette models I've tried for which I have no use, such as the adjustables. (Wanna buy a really nice low-mileage original Slim?) I am quite disappointed in my Merkur razors. I Though they'd be so nice. The best of them I have is a 38C -- good heft, but a bit slippery in the grip, and a little bit too mild for me to get a quick, close shave. Then I have the 1904 open-comb model. It's really pretty, but gives such a mild shave it takes me forever. I'd like to love it, but it needs a more aggressive head for me, so it should go on the block, too. Indian and Pakistani made razors don't always have great material or great plating, but they are often good-looking and perform well for me. Chinese razors, like Wei Shi, etc. tend to be Gillette copies. They're excellent for the price, but often feel as cheap as they are because the handles aren't so good -- at least on the ones I have. I get great shaves from some of them, but I've been there, done that, and have no time for them anymore. I like longer handles. I have a "franken-razor" I put together with a cheap long aluminum two-tone plated handle of Chinese origin, a modified bottom part of an old Gillette Tech head, and an Indian cap (Pearl, from techichi_shave) -- once around the parts bin! -- and it makes me smile every time I shave with it. It performs very well for me, as good as anything, but I seldom use it. I take it on travels and hunting trips. It's almost as aggressive as my Fatip Grande, which is the most aggressive razor I have. I'd have to say the Fatip Grande is #4 on my list. It's actually a bit too aggressive for me, but I have learned not to cut myself, and I really like it. It has great heft and balance. I like the way it looks. It seems very well made and plated. I wish it had a longer handle. It's pretty normal in size, but fairly heavy -- nothing I'd call "grande", but I guess it is to the manufacturer. Cheers! Tony
