I need "Other" as well.... When it's time, I frequent a Turkish Barber..... Not really "old skool" but certainly not "new skool" as well
I know I've mentioned this before, but I get my hair cut at The Man Shop. Gotta love those tool belts and the prices and haircuts aren't bad either...
I don't know what a new type barber shop is, so I voted other. There are no old school barber shops near my home; the last of them went under more than 5 years ago. Those Super Cuts type of places are everywhere, and I am not loyal to any of them. I'll go wherever a coupon in the paper takes me. My wife and I went to a Wonder Cuts yesterday; she needed a trim and had a $1.00 off coupon, and I noticed that a shave was not offered for men, but women couldn't get a permanent either, so maybe this is what a new type barber shop is: a place with fewer services but higher prices.
I would say the barbershop I go to is old-school. At least it would be in Greece, because the barbers and nearly the entire clientele are Greek. It's a terrific place.
I do it myself with with a Wahl trimmer and a 1.5" comb/guide. I do this mainly because I am a cheapskate. I do miss having my hair washed by someone else though. If I could afford it I would have someone wash my hair everyday.
I get my hair cut at a salon that cuts men's and women's hair, but that also has traditional old-school barbers who cut men's hair only. My barber was only in the salon for the last few years, and in a traditional barber shop before then. I got my last haircut from him two weeks ago, as he is retiring - :sad023 x 10 million. He was my barber for nearly 50 years, virtually my entire life.
I clip my own hair. Number 1 guard on a Braun trimmer. Speaking of which, it needs done again (about once a week).
I visit a hoity-toity salon for one reason only... my wife runs the place. I used to get my hair cut religiously at an old time barber. He was my wife's grandfather's barber who sculpted my greasy mane and finished me off with a straight razor and Clubman. In an effort so save beer money, I do occasionally get out the clippers and take care of business myself.
I go to a father son owned barber shop. I have seen the son using a straight razor (disposable blade) touching up some peoples haircuts too. I have never asked him if he offers shaves though.
I have been going to an old school spanish barber for the past 10 years. When I lived in North Carolina for a year I would fly down every two months to get a haircut cause I do not trust anyone else. He does fades, blowouts, classic cuts, flat tops, beard trimming, and hot shaves.
Should be multiple choice. Sometimes I got to an old school barber shop, sometimes a new school. I'm in between barbers right now and it sucks. For some reason not many people can cut my hair and make it look good. The best barbershop in my area was taken out by Hurricane Ike in 2008. The place was right out of the 50s or 60s and the barber had worked there is entire life. Chairs, decorations, the barber sign, everything... reminded me of the place my dad took me in the eighties and I haven't seen one like it since. 'Twas a sad day after the hurricane when I finally got by there and they were hauling stuff out.
I go to an old school barber. He is in his late 70's. Haircuts are still $8.00. He is slowing down so might have to start looking for another option. Paul
'OL SKOOL is the only way to go. My barber is 74. Been cutting hair for 46 years. Only guy around that can cut my greasy pompadour correctly. He offers straight shaves. Always razors my neck and finishes with Clubman. I've been REALLY considering barber college lately. I will have an 'Ol Skool shop if I do pursue it. Something similar to this is what I have in mind. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tUXiPCEmaHY
