Go to the Shave Cream or the Shave Soap sections. Everyone has their favorites, and you will see what most are using.

If you go the can route, I’ve found this one to be the best you can find in a can.

But there are so many creams and soaps that you won’t have to go far to find many to try. Being a beginner has nothing to do with it. Follow your nose and read reviews to better understand performance.

Some of my favorites? Stirling Barbershop. Musgo Real has great scents. RazoRock Blue Barbershop is a new favorite of mine. Some standards are Mitchell’s Wool Fat and Haslinger Schafmilch are both stellar. Better yet, combine these two into one (shave down equal amounts of each and then mix and press back together) and you may just have the best shave soap on the planet. Have fun searching because this is supposed to be fun.

Second this. I've used C.O. Bigelow cream almost exclusively for years now not so much because it is better than Proraso but I used to be able to get it for buy 3 get 1 free on the cream at bath and body works. Seems they no longer carry it. With that said a 1.7 ounce tube will last almost half a year of daily shaving and runs around $6.00 on amazon.

Another consideration is your brush if you go to soaps or creams. Stiffer bristles work better to make lather with harder soaps and vice versa. Boar bristle brushes work better with puck soaps, badger bristle brushes work better with creams. Tub soaps either is good. You also have horse hair brushes which are somewhere between and synthetic brushes which are softer than badger bristle brushes. You'll also need a soap mug for pucks or creams, in a pinch a coffee mug works fine but there are plenty of sets that come with a brush, soap mug and puck of soap and sometimes a brush stand to get started with. Brushes are cheap enough that I'd personally get both a boar and badger brush to start with and figure out what you like better with whatever soap you go for.

A little late, but have you decided on anything yet?

As others have mentioned. I like Proraso a lot.

I think it’s not only a good cream for beginners, but experienced shavers as well.

I like the Red & Green and while I haven’t tried the Blue or White. They get mentioned on the shave forums as well,

I just ordered four 11-oz. containers of Kiss My Face Shave Cream for $26. Works great for me, and it's hard to beat the price.

I don't believe there is anyone who doesn't like this shave cream. Matter of fact, I dab a touch on the different parts of my face before I lather up any shaving soap. The combination makes it lather up like a mofo. Yo?:D:eatdrink047:

You're putting my memory to work here Charlie....I forget the amount of the "haul" I ordered from Rise Intl. not long after I became a member, (9 creams, 5 or 6 tube aftershaves)but as I recall it was about the same price you paid. Course I wouldn't put this in the "beginner" category(the title of this thread),but as we say "kaye sera sera".

They sadly discontinued the Patchouli. That was an outstanding cream.
