That one is about the DS Cosmetic AX. This one is about the Sentinel. For whatever reason, there are some posts about the Sentinel in the DS Cosmetic one.
I tried the 1.5 OC and it wasn't anymore aggressive than my i Kon B1 Open Comb Deluxe. I bought the safety bar version but will probably not use it. Too mild.
I hate to pollute this thread asking about another razor, but what the hey... How does the iKon B1 Open Comb Deluxe compare to a vintage Gillette New Deluxe? I've heard they're pretty close. I have not yet been able to find a New Deluxe at a decent price. Which begs the question -- how much better is the New Deluxe (Or Ikon equivalent) compared to a garden-variety New SC or LC? BTW, I don't have a Goodwill or New Improved, either. thanks
new improved is for old type blades, but is a smooth but aggressive shaver with moderns..not used an ikon, but the new deluxe was designed for a permanent handle attached to the head like a single ring/new improved, hence the extra material.it is modelled after the new LC blade clamping design.with the New groove along the baseplate more material was need to support the handle swaging etc. leftover new deluxe baseplates were sold in black and red special sets with different bar type handles..2 runs of new deluxe were made,1930 with serial numbers,1935 without serial numbers, both around christmas.similar in england also. the new deluxe feels like a heavy new lc..imo.
Better than what I could tell you. I abandoned vintage DE's about 20 years ago in favor of longer handled razors, thus I have a few Black Beauties. I did have at one point all of these razors mentioned, it's been too long for me to try to remember my Gillette version to the iKon version but I bet they are close as that was the point in the first place.
Thanks. I've used the Old Type with modern blades (of course), and they work well. I had no idea they weren't designed for these blades. I prefer the New LC vs the SC, but the SC actually clamps the blade better. Thanks. I've heard good and bad things about iKon -- the bad was mostly about the guy who runs it, whom I know nothing about nor his name. I've heard that some of their razors, like their version of a Tech, is very aggressive. They're one of the hard vendors to figure out with their cryptic names -- it took me awhile to find out that B1 is just a name for their coating. I still have no idea what OSS stands for, but I know it is a hybrid baseplate. I assume it's an acronym.
The B1 "teeth" are more pronounced than X3. Aside from that I don't think there is a big difference. You think the site would have more information in general. It seems more like a 3rd party website.
I broke down and bought a Sentinel head. They had a good sale about a month or 2 ago. It wasn't too much, I think less than $30 shipped. I still haven't used it, since by the time it arrived I had started using my injectors again. I got the 1.5 gap, since I heard that was the "best" one and most like a Wolfie.
Finally tried it (1.5 gap) -- 2 shaves in. Fresh Wizamet blade to start with. For some reason, on the first shave I got irritation that I didn't feel with the alum block. None with 2nd shave. It's very efficient, but smooth. Needs less passes for me than usual. For some reason I detected some blade chatter, although I'm not quite sure what blade chatter sounds like. I always assume what I consider blade chatter to be what others do. Strange because it clamps the blade so well, and very close to the cutting edge. If it is close to a Wolfie, I wouldn't call it a mind-blowing shave, though. After all, technique trumps tools. I saved myself $500+ or so. It is worth the $30 I paid for it.
Thanks. I used to be a shallow angle shaver, until I discovered that steep was giving me smooth, irritation-free shaves from razors I previously hated. As I've mentioned before, shallow vs. steep, riding the cap vs the bar, is really just a starting point. The safety bar needs to touch the skin to provide -- uhm, safety! Also, I got no irritation from my 2nd shave. Are you saying the blade chatter might be from the angle? I'm still puzzled since the design of the razor should cause no chatter. TBH, I'm still not sure what blade chatter is supposed to sound/feel like. But I heard the pings like I was plucking my fingers across a metal comb, if that make any sense. I've heard that sound before with other razors, like my Merkur 33C.
