I started pipes as a late teens/college kid eccentric, but also had the same experience in Huntsville. It's everything the Briary is! The ability to sit for hours with old men talking pipe really shortened my learning curve. Robin, the proprietor, also knew I was a kid with little money, and he steered me to hidden value.
I am actually glad you got to try a 4thG pipe. Ive wondered if the price was quality or hype. You seem to answer that well!
Dr Grabow Grand Duke filled with Newminster Superior Round Slices. I packed it firmish with 5 slices and smoked it during a 4 or 5 mile walk. I tapped out the ash before I went inside perfect timing.
The quality of pipe and it's impact to my enjoyment was shocking. If I had not bought the Stanwell from @Weeper Warrior I might have given up on pipe smoking. Now that Chris encouraged my to buy the Dunhill I am hooked.
Hey Hey, two new pipes arrived moments ago. Missouri Meerschaum...not expensive, so i gave them a go. They look good and now i´m thinking, which one to smoke today. First One: Missouri Meerschaum Corn Cob Second one: Missouri Meerschaum Hardwood The seller was so kind, to send filters with it. Very nice. Here, both pipes together Greetings Thorsten
Mine is an older flea market pipe. I spent $2 or $4 for it, my kaywoodie white bulldog and one other pipe that I gave away as a gift. My Grabow has the S shaped stinger.
Smoked half a flake of Petersons University Flake in my Kaywoodie White Bulldog. Half hour smoke but I had forgotten what I smoked in this pipe. The local shops leftover blend left a despicable flavor that ruined the university flake. My Fiancee talked me into binning the rest of the Suicide blend so I need to remember to salt cleanse this pipe so it doesn't ruin any more smokes for me.
I dated it to sometime between 1934 and 1937 since its a type 2 spoon cleaner. Newer then that and they had a flatter cut saliva trap and older had no curves at all.
On 2nd look I think my grabow might have the type 6 stinger which would change the date to between '45 and '50. The type 2 had 2 holes. I found better pictures a few minutes ago.
I am wondering what every uses to light their pipes with. I see matches in Chris' pipe pictures more often or not. I use a Bic but have just today gotten some matches to try. If I can find my Zippo fuel I may try that for windy days but I don't have the pipe insert.
