I thought I would join in, I dug out my pipe in one of my boxes from the move and found it. :bounce017: How ever my black Cavendish was beyond dried out and nasty smelling, and now Im looking for something else to try. I love the aromatics, but don't know what to try. Help me pick out my next pipe tobacco, I will have to order online, simply because I have no tobacconist local... So till it arrives Im stuck with captain black :angry032:.

Take the Cavendish and put it in a jar (mason is best but an old peanut butter or mayo jar will work). Make sure there is plenty of air space left in the jar. Then wet down a piece of paper towel and ring it out, you only want it damp. Hang the paper towel into the jar, over the jar lip; making sure to keep it from ever touching the tobacco, and tightly screw on the lid. Leave it for 24hrs. This will gently remoisten your tobacco. For more moisture, repeat the process. Just dont put the paper towel in with the tobacco, as it can cause mold that way.

Hope that helps ya some, and welcome to the PotD thread!:)

2015-08-07 18.40.25.jpg In the mood for something a bit strong and I just got some Orlik Dark Strong Kentucky in. First time with this baccy, so I'm using the Wiley bent dublin, a pipe I'm very familiar with. I'll let you know how it goes. The tin note is similar to Peterson ' s Irish Flake, which I love, but a bit sweeter. Here goes!

If you like Irish Flake, the Orlik DSK is a guaranteed winner. Good stuff!

Is it tobacco scented? Very cool.

There may be a little toppong, although I'may not sensing much. I think the tin note comes from the Virginia and dark fired tobaccos alone.

So far, a much milder smoke than I expected. You can definitely detect the virginias, which mellow the dark fired a bit. Not as strong as Irish Flake, wit more subtle flavors and a mellower room note. I dig it! This definitely earned a place in the cellar, and I'must barely a quarter through the bowl!

Random: I am a huge fan of Jimmy Cauty and Alex Paterson as Orb. Seeing your KLF avatar makes me smile every time.

I thought the DSK was very well balanced.

It is, and it pairs great with strong black coffee!

Try Orlik Golden Mixture... It's what a mildly aromatic Cavendish/Virginia blend is supposed to be like. I get all my stuff on pipesandcigars.com

I keep Orlik around all the time. Golden Sliced is my desert island tobacco.

Glad you joined in! Have you tried anything other than aromatic? Personally I'm mostly a Virginia or Virginia/Perique smoker. Those aren't aromatic but Virginias have some natural sweetness.

So, end of the bowl. This has a nice, slightly meaty texture, and the sweet Virginia defiantly add a nice touch. The smoke varied throughout the smoke, sometimes Virginia forward, sometimes dark fires forward. Definitely keeps you interested. A bit of a nic hit, if you are sensitive, use a bit of caution, and maybe a smaller bowl. I love this stuff, and am definitely stocking up on it!

I agree with Bama Samurai on pipesandcigars.com for an online vendor. I'm fortunate to have a good local shop where I have gotten many good recommendations over the years until I began to refine my preferences. In addition to Bama Samurai's suggestions, another good tinned tobacco to bridge the gap from the really sweet aromatics to more pure tobacco blends is Former's Private Flake and Former's Bird's Eye Flake. Both are mild with some natural sweetness. A couple of bulk flakes worth consideration are Stokkebye's Navy Flake and Stokkebye's Bullseye flake. If you need help with flake preparation, be sure and ask, most anyone on here will be more than happy to help you.

Edit: I strongly suggest that when you purchase a new tobacco, when you open the tin or immediately after getting a bulk, store them in a mason jar with a lid that will seal down. This will prevent the tobacco from drying out.
