I plan to do science with it tonight. With OGS. Too bad I don't have any Maker's Mark to go with it. Sent from my Pixel 2 using Tapatalk
So long as it smokes well, the rest is of little consequence. Just trying to learn me some pipes. The bowl is really deep on this one. It'll be interesting to see how it goes. Sent from my Pixel 2 using Tapatalk
There's a method of loading that involves screwing a pinch of tobacco into the bowl. Don't have to push it all the way to the bottom. I have a couple vintage pipes that defied identification. The makers are well known but the ones I own don't show up in a search or in catalogues from the era of manufacture. You're just one step further out not knowing who made it. Hope it's a good one! Cool that it came with a matching tamp.
Sounds like the air pocket method, which works well with deep pipes. I’ve also used another similar method, where I scoop the pipe into the tobacco. Then I take another pinch of tobacco, kind of push in and gradually roll in the edges, without pressing down. I read about that somewhere, can’t remember where; but it seems to work very well, not having a lot of pressure on the bottom, very similar to the air pocket.
I should have added the air pocket is probably best achieved by folding and stuffing a flake, without pressing all the way down.
Let us know how it burned. You may notice tobacco flavors are more intense when folded and not rubbed.
You simply never know about those artisan makers. When buying, pipes should seem light for their size, have no cracks, exhibit only minor putty fills, and be drilled properly. Beyond that...it's about cake, techniques, and maintenance. I have thirty buck pipes that I like better than one twenty pipes. You just never really know...the basic rule of thumb being...the pricier and more prestigious the maker, the more likely it is that the pipe is a grand slam winner.
Well, I wish I knew who made it, because it is a seriously good smoke. It appears nothing has ever been smoked in it before. For $20, I dig it A LOT. Sent from my Pixel 2 using Tapatalk
Indeed. I did the fold and screw method with the Orlik, leaving a little space at the bottom as @BamaT suggested. It resulted in a nice, long, slow, steady burn. I can't say definitively that it resulted in intensified flavor, but it was smooth and nice. No gurgling at all, good draw. I have no complaints. Sent from my Pixel 2 using Tapatalk
I now have three pipes that I really like for different reasons for under $40 all in. I'm set. Sent from my Pixel 2 using Tapatalk
Perfect. The leaf is where it's at anyhow! From what I see, you actually have three pipes that are really all very good pieces of briar. They should outlast your life if cared for properly.
It’s not a style I prefer, however, if it smokes well and you enjoy it that’s all that matters. Congrats on the new acquisition!
Well, a Mr. Smith over on The Brown Leaf was able to identify it. It is a Tigger, made by Tony Warner. Sent from my Pixel 2 using Tapatalk
You’ve done well! Congrats on the good start. Plus, it was good to get started with OGS, one of the best flakes around, and much better in my opinion to start with versus some of the bulk aromatics. Those can be (usually are) goopy wet with PG, leading to smoking hot and burning the tongue.
