Ditto! I really love this thread. I would kill to have a local club, but whereas even the nearest smoke shop is 60 miles away, I really don't see it happening, lol. I do get to smoke with my brothers (they prefer cigars, and that after many years of my prodding, lol); while we discuss all manner of topics, and it's great. But to have more gents to join in would be great. And who wouldn't love a weekly poker/billiards night?! (long time dream of mine, lol) But this thread allows for us to kind of meet and have our round table, in spirit if not in person. It's like having our own little smokers club or tobacco bar. And I absolutely shall! My excitement, as always, is like a kid on Christmas.
I am ten miles or so from the nearest cigar lounge, 40 to nearest decent pipe shop. This thread fills a void, I really like pipes and tobacco!
I'd like to see ome of our past posters on POTD get back in. KCHighlife kicked off this thread but I haven't seen him in a while. I know Weeper Warrior had some dental work. I hope that went well and he'll be able to start posting again soon. There have been a few others along the way, hope they can get back to posting.
Sooo...I wonder when do you people find the most enjoyable time to smoke a pipe ? Between job@desk and a family with kids I have almost no free time during the day. I can't smoke indoors and outside is too darn hot to smoke during the day. The only suitable time is after 9pm and by then I'm so tired that I'm too lazy to take out everything and smoke for 30-40 minutes. That leaves me only the weekends ...
Generally, I prefer to smoke late in the evening when the day is done. Caution must be exercised in my choice of tobacco though. Too much nicotine keeps me awake it seems. I believe the whole ritual of the pipe is calming and helps me turn off my mind and rest.
It's my experience that gold and red Virginia tobaccos are fairly mild on the nicotine. But, as you know, nicotine stimulation is a real thing, and I wish I knew more about nicotine levels in different pipe tobacco styles.
I'm kind of what you would call a heavy pipe smoker, meaning sometimes 7 bowls a day or so. I'm lucky though as I own where I work, and my office is generally off limits to anyone save owners, i.e. my brothers, father and I. Also, we all smoke in the tow trucks, as again, we own them and it's just us. And then of course, same thing at home. My favorite smoke of the day though is generally at night, when I sit down to read (another reason I prefer a bent pipe), or watch a show or movie. I'll usually smoke something "special" at this time; like a good tinned tobacco. I find a good way to enjoy a smoke during a hot day, is to accompany it with a good Iced Coffee or Iced Tea.
Here's a pic I thought was pretty good. No pipes, but this is my brothers and I (I'm in the middle), taking a break and enjoying Iced Coffees and some hand rolled cigars my little brother brought back from El Salvador on the bed of my truck.
On days when I am outdoors, my Kaywoodie might see three bowls, but this doesn't happen often. Me (Chris), my wife and our new pointer pup, in a farmhouse in Strasburg, CO. He was eight days here, born 15 August. No pics of me smoking. We have a son who's 20. Off at college!
He's adoreable! I love dogs. We have 2 Great Pyrenese (safety measure due to the bears, wolves and big cats in our locale), an Aussie Shepard mix and sheltie When my mom took this pic, My oldest Brother Ed had recently retired from the Army Guard after over 22 years, he had to retire after his last deployment. It was.....rough. And my little brother Ryan had just returned from a mission to El Salvador in I think his 3rd year of enlistment. Funny considering the baby face huh? lol
I have a nine year old German Shorthaired Pointer that is half brother to the puppy. In Colorado, these are gun dogs, used to flush pheasant and chukar from the prairie grass, and retrieve the downed bird. They are my favorite dogs, the nine year old is my buddy.
Here's a pic of a package I recieved today from @Bama Samurai , can't thank him enough! -1 Dr. Grabow Royal Duke (straight pot i think with smooth finish) -1 Dr. Grabow El Dorado (1/2 bent, Rhodesian I think? rusticated) -1 Roma 1/2 bent Zulu, dark sandblast -1 tin of Villiger 1888 Early Morning -1 tin Sam Gawith Navy Flake -1 folding pipe stand in a case -3 softees pipe bits -3 boxes of Dr. Grabow filters This was an awesome package and a HUGE surprise that went WAY beyond what I would have expected. SUPER STOKED! Thanks again @Bama Samurai .
I shall good sir. And in fact am! lol Having some Sutliff Private Stock: Old San Fransisco in the Roma Zulu. It's a tumbled out broken flake of Virginia, Perique, Dark Fired Burley and Latakia. I find the Virginia and Perique to take front and center in this one; as it's quite naturally sweet and zesty like the Viprati VaPer, but with a slight mellow, nutty flavor, that is also present in the room not, along with the smokiness of the Latakia. This seems to have less of the Latakia smokiness than the other blends I got; but that's not at all bad. Actually a very good tobacco. I'm starting to think that none of the tobacco that came in the sampler will be unlikeable.
Since you are enjoying the latakia blends, I think you'll really like the Villiger 1888 Early Day. It's their version of Dunhill's classic Early Morning Pipe. I don't remember Early Day being a nicotene bomb, but EMP sure rocked me!
