Labor Day POTD. While smoking a Boston butt on the Weber kettle grill, I was smoking Sam Gawith Medium Virginia Flake in the Chacom Canadian. Sorry I'm a couple days late posting. Yes, that's a pickle jar that I'm storing the MVF in. No worries though; I wash the jars thoroughly, dry, and then leave a fair amount of baking soda in the jar with the lid on for at least a couple of weeks. After dumping the baking soda, rinsing and drying well, the tobacco goes in. After the washing and baking soda treatment, there is no odor left. The lid has a rubberized seal in it, so it makes a good seal for storing tobacco.
Got a delivery today A Stanwell 2012 POTY as well as some Orlik GS and Seattle Evening Pipe tobacco I ordered a week and a half ago.
Well, I placed an order today. I should be stocked up for awhile. All your suggestions, plus a few others to get me over $99 for free shipping. 4 oz of the Stokkebye tobacco's was only $1.75 an ounce, so I picked a few. That's a good looking pipe! I've got a number of bent pipes, but lately I've developed an affinity for straight pipes.
Man, you will be stocked up for a while! If you plan on opening several to be working on at one time, I would suggest jarring the tobacco after opening. Just be careful to label your jars. I've got a couple that I have no idea what's in them! Since you followed my suggestions, if none of them pan out to your liking I'll be in trouble!
Yeah, I expect to get a box of mason jars. I'm not sure how the bulk tobacco will arrive, probably in plastic bags so I should jar it even if I won't use it for awhile. I tried the Orlik GS in my Yello-Bole, it was much better than the burleys that came with my starter pack from P&C. Since I smoke outsdie, I'll probably wait until the thunderstorms leave the area before the first use of the Stanwell, maybe friday night or saturday. Since I typically only smoke one or two bowls a day, this should last me for awhile.
Well that Parker Jockey Club stem has a very nice sheen to it. Almost like someone had restored it and polished it!
I never knew of baking soda. You taught it and it worked great. I actually used a commercial polish, but baking soda cleaned it fast.
First smoke in the Stanwell with a bowlful of the Orlik. A pretty good smoke but the bowl got a little too hot to comfortably hold a couple of times. Went inside to watch Fixer Upper, then tried the Seattle Evening in a corncob. What a difference, a much earthier, mustier tobacco. I'm not sure if I like it or not, but I'll definitely smoke it again. That's one of the benefits I see in pipes instead of cigars, there's much more flavor variety.
It's hard to say based on a picture, but my first impulse is no. None of them have been cleaned up that I can tell. So you would have to spend some time cleaning them up. If I could see them in person, see if there are any brand names in the lot (e.g. Charatan, Ben Wade, Cavicchi), evaluate the draft hole, look for cracks in the bowl, etc. then there is a chance you would find a keeper. But if you have to decide based on pictures, personally, I'd pass. That's just my opinion. Now if you could get the lot for a bargain price, then if you got a bummer or two it wouldn't matter as much. Edit: do you have an opportunity to examine them in person? If so, look for obvious defects and if none, they might be worth taking a chance on. I'd just have to see each one and decide what I might offer.
What kind of polish did you use? It's possible that a commercial polish would provide better protection against future oxidation than olive oil.
At first glance, probably not. Bottom far left, maybe, but they all show oxidation and wear. Do you have a particular interest in older pipes?
It's called "Briar pipe wipe". It's an aerosol carnauba wax polish. You spray it on a cloth and use a Saturday cloth to clean the pipe surfaces.
I don't have a particular interest in old pipes, I'm still toying with the idea of pipe smoking, and I thought this might be a cheaper way to get started. I would have the chance to handle each one, but even I can tell that several mouthpieces don't look good. I was also curious if any of them were special in any way. If they are just run of the mill pipes, then I don't think I'll bother with them. Thanks for the advice!
Just got the UPS notice today, Pipes and Cigars is slow on their standard shipping. I'll probably have to wait another week.
May just be that they have a lot of orders in with the end of summer sales going on. It normally takes me 2 days to get my orders from them; and while I do live closer, that's still a very quick turn around. I would suspect that it's just due to them currently having a large number of orders to process, and isn't the norm for them.
I've been thinking about getting this pipe for a couple of weeks. I really like the looks of it and it's almost 40 years old, which I also find appealing. I went ahead and placed the order tonite. It will be my first italian pipe. http://www.walkerbriarworks.com/html/pipe2031bk.html
