The lighter worked out well. The butane pipe lighter insert was this one, which fits into a Zippo case. My wife gave me a Zippo lighter with my initials engraved for our anniversary, and the insert fit perfectly.
Agree, bought many a cigar from there, prior to taking up pipe. Next trip up will be stopping in for sure.
The Wessex Standard Saddle Bit I post on here was from that same trip, and I bought a bunch (a pound) of Custom American Burley from them as well.
How's the nic kick on the Wessex Burley Slices? Peterson's University Flake didn't bother me at all, so I might venture out a little into some burley.
I smoked Suicide in my dr grabow. It had more flavors then a drunken fruit salad. Along with a strong tanginess and a woodsy taste. Lots of nicotine. Almost made me sick. I liked it but its not an everyday smoke. It was a fast smoke but it didn't bite or get hot. For $1 an ounce it was worth it. I wont get more. But I will finish this ounce. I wont smoke it in any other pipe. I'm too afraid of ruining the mild taste of the other tobaccos I have.
Hi Tony! It was no stronger than University Flake, but I suggest to start with Solani 656 Aged Burley. I need another bowl or two to be fair to the Wessex, but love Solani. Wessex is more intensely herbal or something. Solani is slightly sweet and nutty, produces thick smoke, and burns rather like OGS. In fact, treat it as OGS and you're set.
To get nerdy, the fermentation that occurs when pressing flakes makes the Burley more acidic, reducing the amount of bio-available alkaloids, like nicotine, produced during the burn. Burley is more alkaline than Virginia, and is usually grown in nitrogen-rich soil, leading to higher average yield of nicotine versus Virginia.
I have a cottage about 25 miles from TC so I get over that way a lot. The cottage is closed up for the winter now, however I still go up there to the casino in the winter, in fact making a trip in a few weeks and will certainly swing by there and have a look see at their pipes and baccy, just for informational purposes of course. Oh who am I kidding, I have been on a slight PAD and TAD issue at the moment so you know what will happen.....
Thanks. Already have a Savinelli 320, I like that way it smokes so much that when an online vendor have 15% of entire order, well just had to get the Rossi version to compare. Both smoke very smooth and cool, have yet to have anything bush ash at the end in either pipe. The Sav has their 6mm filter system, Rossi no filter. Would recommend either. Rossi is a little cheaper, but I believe they are now owned by Savinelli.
A lot of tobacco shops do this, I know The Briary does, taking bits and pieces of leftovers and throwing everything in together and mixing it up. P&C has their version of this as well. I've tasted The Briary's version, and your description as drunken fruit salad is pretty appropriate! Even at $1 an ounce, it's not very good to me.
It wasn't the best ever but it also wasn't the worst. Try an old general store that has been there for 100 years and buy a pouch of anything. Dry, crubbly, tasted like dirt and dead bugs. Also burnt unbelievably hot. I put it out after 1/4 of the bowl because I was afraid I would burn through my pipe. I remember paying way to much for it too.
Pipe of the day - Peterson University Flake rubbed out, in an H.I.S. bent, while I cut up leaves in the yard with my lawn tractor. Sorry, no pics. This is one of my yard pipes, along with a Roma bent and several M.M. cobs. The H.I.S. and Roma were relatively inexpensive counter pipes, but are well drilled, and pretty good smokers. Sorry, no pic.
