Its easy to do with the practice they give you. I have cut turkey heads off with ball and patch blackpowder at 150. They didn't even twitch. Easiest turkey harvest I ever had on the farm. Big broad breasted bronze that were too big. It was hard to reach around them to pick up. 18 month old birds weighed about 100lbs give or take.
Y'all are talking my language now. I've shot in various matches through the years, most recently IDPA, a combat oriented handgun match where both speed and accuracy matter, and handgun steel plate, a very fun match with immediate feedback from the steel plates. The one thing that has intrigued me is long range bullseye shooting. I've got a Rock River M4 that I really enjoy, but my old eyes can't handle the iron sights anymore. So I'm considering several scope options, nothing with more than a 1-4x, or maybe a simple red dot.
A red dot even with no magnifiction makes a huge difference. I can double my effective range with one.
To all who gather here: Thank you for all the fun and fellowship this year. I am really looking forward to 2016 and another year of fun with the pipe crew! Merry Christmas, and may God bless each one of you.
Went by The Briary this afternoon to pick up a stocking stuffer for my son and future son-in-law, a couple of Opus X cigars. I picked up a new pipe, I know y'all are surprised! This is their store brand counter pipe. When Skip purchased some pipe making equipment, he also acquired a number of pipes that were machine made, but not drilled or finished. Skip then drills them, and they are finished in plum, natural (what you see here), and black. $49.95 for a nice small to medium billiard, with his store name imprinted, and the hole is perfectly drilled. Not the finish you might see on a $150 pipe, but quite a bargain I believe. He has several hundred of these in different shapes (mostly straights), but they aren't listed on his website. He also just happened to have an unopened bag of Newminister Superior round slices, dark fired Kentucky and Virginia spun and coin sliced. The coins are fairly thin and loosely spun, so they're a little ragged looking as you can see in the pic. They're small and then enough that I just wadded up about 3 of them and stuffed in the new Briary billiard. So far so good! It will take another couple of bowls before I reach a conclusion, but I'm liking it so far. My Mosin-Nagant case tamp also shown.
This morning was Lane 1-Q in a Medico Gold Crest apple, and this afternoon was OGS in a Brittania Royal Lancer. I like the grain on the Brittania, kind of a fish eye grain on one side and a flame on the other.
Here's a scope I've been thinking about: http://swfa.com/Bushnell-1-4x24-AR-Optics-30mm-Rifle-Scope-P61352.aspx I do like the dot in an illuminated circle, and the range markers, but not real sure how useful that will really be. A good basic red dot, preferably with an adjustable dot size would probably work for the vast majority of my shooting. The ability to go up to 4x on the Bushnell would allow for some flexibility at longer ranges.
Christmas morning before the teenagers are all up. SWMBO is in the kitchen baking pies, so I need to stay out of there. Viprati in the meerschaum for a short smoke. I decided this wasn't a mini after comparing the dimensions and looking on the AND Meerschaum website, but it does have a small bowl, about 5/8" diameter and 7/8" deep. It's a little under a 30 minute smoke. I clipped my fingernails since the previous pic.
On the way home, Xmas Eve about 2pm, I ducked into a local tobacco shop. Purchased one tin of Gatsby Flake, 3pk of Dill's cleaners, and a can of Arango Briar Pipe Wipe.
