I do not even know what to say. I didn't actually know such a thing was possible. Can metal even be porous? Is the Yuma becoming pitted on a microscopic level? So weird!
Oh yeah definitely it can be porous especially pot metal. If you were to break the handle in half and examine the pot metal it looks kinda like coral. Really rough not smooth. Lots of little crooks and crannies for something to seep into. Science!
Pot metal can become porous depending upon the alloy mix and how pure the smelting process is. The worse case is that it develops Zinc Pest. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zinc_pest
Well, I am going to go out on a crazy limb, and assume the smelting process for Yumas is not all that pure. From the look of the surface, it actually wouldn't surprise me to find that they are made from recycled metal.
I love that blue pot metal look! Also...just sent @Chuck F a USPS tracking number....the Yuma road show rolls on.
I'm actually pretty sure that these are made from recycled materials, and they are definitely the definition of cheap pot metal. One of the things that gets me when people talk about Zamac being cheap pot metal is that no, it's really a decent alloy. Pot metal are things like this Yuma razor. Metal you can break with your hands because it's so poorly refined and smelted. I swear they tore a bunch of bolts and nails out of an old building, melted them down and poured it into Yuma razor molds.
THE YUMA IS ON ITS WAY! NOTE: I threw some blades in to the box to pass along. I took it to the shipping place today and it weighed in at 13.4 oz. As many of you shippers know, 13oz is the magic weight where packages double in shipping price. At 13oz the package cost $6.15 to ship, at 13.4oz it went to over $12. I was faced with a dillemma as there is nothing in the box worth $6 on its own. So I had the choice of taking out product or packing material. Since there was nothing breakable in the box, I chose packing material. All the pink plasticy foam is gone and the box rattles like crazy. I'm sorry, it was a call I had to make and I could tell it as all packed very carefully and nicely, but at the end of the day it was non-breakable product over packing material. If something goes terribly awry with this box, I will gladly accept full blame. I've already dyed the razor blue, so please blame anything that breaks on me too. If anyone feels slighted I will gladly send then $4 to cover the entire contents of the box
I may buy one of these cheapies for my emergency bug out kit, I had a 40s superspeed in there but a 3 dollar razor would be better. Can't wait to try it out
Mine was a 6x6x6 cube, 17.90 ounces shipped priority mail for $9, could have sent it for ~$7, but opted for speed. I really don't understand the USPS price structure.
Me?! Naaaaaahh.... I do have a paper clip I'm pla.... Nah, I think what you're doing seems like great fun
Zamak has many levels of alloy and I may still have the Yuma I got from Bestshave somewhere or maybe it went in a traveling box. At any rate, it looked like the lowest possible grade of Zamak possible and still stay together. Maybe the Barbacide soak and blue dye might prevent Zinc Pest, but I highly doubt it.
I'm pretty sure you're going to want that Super Speed when that hurricane/earthquake/sharknado happens. Nice things will be hard to come by.
