    Menthol Monday:

Prep: Hot shower, Neutrogena Invigorating Face Wash, TSD Jasmine Sambac preshave balm
    Brush: Simpson 56 Best Badger
    Soap: Stirling Glacial Obsidian
    Razor: Merkur 1904 41c
    Blade: Bic (4)
    Passes: WTG, XTG (10, 11)
Post: Cold water splash, Bloc Osma alum, Dickinson's WH, Aqua Velva Ice Blue AS splash
    Cologne: Xeryus by Givenchy

It's my own fault, but I'm apparently out of practice with making good lather with the Stirling Glacial Obsidian. As in the past, I let it bloom longer (which worked for me, despite others having the opposite experience), took extra swirls to get enough product on the 56, and bowl-lathered (again, this works better for me for Stirling, contrary to others' experience). Unfortunately, as had been the case when I first got the soap, the second pass's lather was thin, airy, and decidedly substandard. Combine that with an aging blade on its last day, and I settled for two passes and something between SAS and DFS results. The positive side is there were no injuries or irritation.

My first scuttle/shave bowl and still my favorite. If you decide to purchase one, make sure you have Julie put in a dribble port so you can trickle in warm water when you need to. She does it for free and will triple check with you to be sure which hand you hold the scuttle so the dribble port will be top side so you tilt it towards you.

post: Nivea balm - Arctic Freeze

Today's shave was a BBS with a few weepers. That's not really unusual when I rotate to the R41. It can take a shave or two for me to tweak my handling. Except for the weepers, the BBS was smooth with no irritation. The Nivea balm (which has minimal cooling, BTW!) stung just a little bit, but that was it.

Today's shave was a good one, so what more is there to say? Maybe nothing. Maybe I'm just "in a mood," but today I am (once again) wondering about my ideal shave. I was pleased when I learned to dance with both devils — R41 (2013) and FaTip Grande — and have enjoyed good shaves from both. However, is this what I want my shave to be? This morning I was thinking "not so much."

Typing this up, I realize that maybe the razor du jour is like an MP3 playlist. You can load a playlist with nothing but your favorite songs and it somehow will be ill-suited to a given moment. Maybe I just picked the R41 on a day when I should have used an injector!

WHEW! I am glad I muddled through my shaving malaise before making a hasty decision! Part of me still regrets letting go of my FatBoy, even though I know I prefer the Slim. ... stupid RAD! It also drives razor hoarding. ... ;)

Following a great intro to traditional shaving during May (and relishing not just the shaves, but learning about and gathering all the cool tools associated with it), it’s now time to hunker down and focus just on the skills.

Today is the beginning of a month-long regimen for me to focus just on my technique. The conventional wisdom on this site has convinced me to lockdown on using the same tools every day for the entire month in order to just focus on razor technique. Despite our species’ inclination towards a short attention span, I’m actually looking forward to this process. I figure that if I can improve on my skills, I can soon join in on all the fun you all have comparing the nuanced differences between your tools!

    Cheers!
